    Vote on appointment of Wopke Hoekstra and new tasks for Vice-President Šefčovič

    After this week’s hearings and written follow-up questions for both candidates, plenary will vote at noon on the appointment of Wopke Hoekstra (Netherlands) as Commissioner for Climate Action and Maroš Šefčovič’s (Slovakia) new role as Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal.

    Updated rules for border controls in the Schengen free movement area

    At noon, Parliament will vote on its position for talks with Council on the reform of the Schengen Borders Code. The draft text says that restrictions and border controls must be temporary, targeted and justified and calls for enhanced police cooperation as an alternative to border controls.

    Reconstructing Ukraine: committee vote

    The Budgets and Foreign Affairs committees will vote on the creation of a dedicated Ukraine facility of up to €50 billion for 2024 to 2027 to support the country’s recovery, reconstruction and modernisation. The full House will debate and vote on the facility during the 16-19 October session.

    Combating human trafficking and protecting victims

    The Civil Liberties and Gender Equality committees will adopt their position on a draft bill aiming to crack down on human trafficking, while increasing sanctions and enhancing victims’ protection.

    In brief

    Ensuring a better internet for kids. Plans to improve child protection online, how to enhance digital literacy, and the challenges posed by younger people accessing the internet will be discussed with Commissioner Šuica at around 11.00, followed by a vote on a resolution.

    Treatment of urban wastewater. MEPs will debate updated rules on the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater to better protect the environment and human health. The vote on Parliament’s position for talks with Council will take place at noon.

    Situation of truck drivers. At 15.00, MEPs will debate with Commissioner Hahn the poor sanitary conditions, low levels of security and lack of parking places in rest areas for truck drivers.

    Between 12.00 and 14.00, plenary will vote, among other issues, on:

    • a new EU standard to fight greenwashing in the bond markets;
    • the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh after Azerbaijan’s attack and the continuing threats against Armenia;
    • Moldova’s path to the EU;
    • the human rights situation in Afghanistan, in particular the persecution of former government officials;
    • the case of Zarema Musaeva in Chechnya; and
    • the situation in Egypt, in particular the sentencing of Hisham Kassem.
