Infineon Introduces CoolGaN™ BDS and Smart Sense: Advancing Power Solutions

(IN BRIEF) Infineon Technologies AG has announced the release of two groundbreaking CoolGaN™ product technologies: CoolGaN bidirectional switch (BDS) and CoolGaN Smart Sense, designed to revolutionize power management solutions. The CoolGaN BDS series offers superior soft- and hard-switching capabilities across a range of bidirectional switches, while the CoolGaN Smart Sense products feature lossless current sensing technology, streamlining design complexity and minimizing power losses. With applications spanning from mobile device USB ports to battery management systems, these innovations promise heightened efficiency, density, and reliability, along with significant cost savings. Engineering samples of the CoolGaN BDS 40 V are already available, with further releases scheduled throughout 2024 and early 2025, while CoolGaN Smart Sense samples will be accessible in August 2024. Infineon will showcase these advancements at PCIM Europe 2024, demonstrating its commitment to decarbonization and digitalization.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 5-June-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY), a German semiconductor manufacturer, has unveiled two groundbreaking CoolGaN™ product innovations, the CoolGaN bidirectional switch (BDS) and CoolGaN Smart Sense, signaling a leap forward in power management solutions. The CoolGaN BDS series offers unparalleled soft- and hard-switching capabilities across a range of bidirectional switches at 40 V, 650 V, and 850 V, with applications spanning from mobile device USB ports to battery management systems. Meanwhile, the CoolGaN Smart Sense line introduces lossless current sensing technology, streamlining design complexity and minimizing power losses, making it ideal for consumer USB-C chargers and adapters.

The high voltage variants of the CoolGaN BDS, available at 650 V and 850 V, boast a true normally-off monolithic bi-directional switch design with four operational modes. Leveraging gate injection transistor (GIT) technology, these devices feature independent isolated control and substrate terminals, ensuring exceptional performance even under repetitive short-circuit conditions. By replacing conventional transistors with a single BDS unit, applications stand to benefit from heightened efficiency, density, and reliability, leading to substantial cost savings. Furthermore, these devices excel in various implementations, including single-phase H4 PFC and HERIC inverters and three-phase Vienna rectifiers, optimizing performance in AC/DC or DC/AC topologies.

The introduction of the CoolGaN BDS 40 V further expands Infineon’s portfolio, offering a normally-off, monolithic bi-directional switch powered by the company’s proprietary Schottky Gate GaN technology. With a 6 mΩ R DS(on), the initial 40 V CoolGaN BDS product promises significant advantages over traditional Si FETs, including up to 75 percent PCB area savings and more than 50 percent reduction in power losses, all at a lower cost.

On the other hand, the CoolGaN Smart Sense products bring enhanced electrostatic discharge protection and seamless integration with controller current sense for peak current control and overcurrent protection. With a rapid current sense response time of ~200 ns, these products ensure compatibility with common controller blanking times, maximizing efficiency and facilitating cost savings.

Engineering samples of the CoolGaN BDS 40 V are currently available, with additional variants scheduled for release throughout 2024 and early 2025. Similarly, CoolGaN Smart Sense samples will be accessible in August 2024. For more information, visit Infineon’s official website. Infineon will showcase these innovations and more at PCIM Europe 2024 in Nuremberg, Germany, from June 11 to 13, 2024, demonstrating its commitment to decarbonization and digitalization.

    Availability

Engineering samples of the CoolGaN BDS 40 V are available now for 6 mΩ and will follow in Q3 2024 for 4 mΩ and 9 mΩ. Samples of the CoolGaN BDS 650 V will be available in Q4 2024, and 850 V will follow early 2025. CoolGaN Smart Sense samples will be available in August 2024.
