NWO Drives Collaboration in Dutch Earth and Environmental Sciences with Launch of EES White Paper

(IN BRIEF) The NWO Round Table Earth and Environmental Sciences has launched the White Paper on Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) to strengthen collaboration and coherence within the Dutch EES research community. The document outlines key activities, networks, and integration with national priorities like sector plans and Knowledge and Innovation Agendas. Acting as a strategic tool, the white paper enables the National EES Research Community, facilitated by NWO, to provide advice on research policy and grant instruments. Developed through an inclusive process involving over 300 community members, the white paper emphasizes the importance of increased interaction among researchers and institutions to advance the field. As a living document, it will be updated regularly to reflect progress and emerging opportunities. NWO invites all scientists in the field to join the Research Community to actively contribute to shaping the future of earth and environmental sciences in the Netherlands.

(PRESS RELEASE) THE HAGUE, 5-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The recently unveiled White Paper on Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) provides a comprehensive overview of the EES field in the Netherlands, detailing its activities, networks, and integration with national priorities, such as sector plans, NWA routes, and Knowledge and Innovation Agendas. Published on November 28, 2024, this document aims to unify the national EES research community and identify opportunities for its future development.

Commissioned by the NWO Round Table Earth and Environmental Sciences, the white paper serves as a foundation to enhance collaboration within the EES field. It enables the National EES Research Community, facilitated by NWO, to provide informed advice on research policy, grant instruments, and strategic initiatives.

Professor Peter van Bodegom, a board member of the NWO Science Domain, praised the white paper’s value:
“This document greatly supports the bottom-up mobilization of the EES research field and connects it to NWO. Through the NWO Round Table and Research Community, we now have effective channels to engage the entire EES network.”

The white paper highlights opportunities for greater coherence and interaction within the field. By working closely with the EES Research Community Committee and the Council for Earth and Environmental Sciences, researchers can showcase the interconnectedness of their work and create momentum for advancing the EES field as a whole.

The NWO Round Table aims to use this collaboration to guide policy, such as the Open Competition and Talent Programme, ensuring alignment with the needs of the research community.

The white paper was created through an inclusive process. Members of the EES Research Community contributed to its draft, which was further refined during discussions at the NWO Congress NAC and through written feedback. The final version, authored by eight researchers with support from a reading group, reflects the collective input of over 120 contributors.

As a living document, the white paper will continue to evolve with input from the growing National Research Community, now comprising more than 300 members. Updates will ensure it remains relevant and reflective of the field’s progress.

The NWO Round Table encourages all scientists in the earth and environmental sciences to join the EES Research Community. Membership offers opportunities to contribute to key discussions, shape the direction of research, and engage with initiatives that promote the advancement of this vital field.

This collaborative approach marks a significant step forward in fostering a unified and dynamic research ecosystem for earth and environmental sciences in the Netherlands.
