IKEA Transforms Fulfillment: New Lommila Centre Delivers 24/7 Convenience and Sustainable Innovation

(IN BRIEF) IKEA is enhancing its customer service by launching 24/7 pick-up lockers in Finland, which are connected to a new, €55 million distribution center in Lommila. This strategic development redefines the function of traditional warehouses by merging operational fulfillment with customer service, offering a cost-effective pick-up option. The facility, which houses Finland’s largest set of pick-up lockers, allows customers to retrieve a wide range of products at any time. In addition to improving convenience, the centre promotes sustainability through electric vehicle deliveries, extensive solar panel installations, geothermal heating, and biodiversity initiatives. Building on similar efforts in the UK, this initiative is a key component of IKEA’s drive toward a more customer-centric and digitally integrated retail experience.

(PRESS RELEASE) LEIDEN, the Netherlands, 20-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — IKEA is revolutionizing its customer service by enhancing its physical stores, fulfillment centers, and digital platforms with the introduction of 24/7 pick-up lockers in Finland. This innovative service, integrated with a brand-new customer distribution center in Lommila, exemplifies IKEA’s commitment to providing convenience and flexibility. The state-of-the-art facility represents a €55 million investment that redefines the traditional role of warehouses. No longer limited solely to fulfillment and replenishment, these centers now offer an added cost-effective service option for customers.

Marcus Baumgartner, Global Fulfilment & Services Manager at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), emphasized, “In the past, a new distribution centre’s sole purpose was fulfilment and replenishment. Yet, with this approach, we are redefining the role of our warehouses. They continue to meet our operational and fulfilment needs while also providing customers with an additional, cost-effective service option.”

The new distribution centre in Lommila not only streamlines the flow of products but also houses Finland’s largest array of pick-up lockers. These lockers enable customers to collect items ranging from small home accessories to complete kitchen sets at any hour, ensuring unparalleled convenience. This development follows similar initiatives in the UK, where IKEA has already implemented pick-up locker systems to offer customers enhanced flexibility.

Sustainability remains at the heart of this innovation. The facility is designed to lower emissions through electric vehicle deliveries and is equipped with 1,744 solar panels, which generate roughly one-third of its energy requirements. Moreover, the centre utilizes geothermal heating and supports biodiversity initiatives, reinforcing IKEA’s pledge to environmentally responsible retail practices.

This new initiative marks a major milestone in IKEA’s journey toward a more customer-centric, sustainable, and digitally integrated fulfillment and services network. As consumer behaviors evolve, IKEA continues to push the boundaries of retail innovation—not only on the showroom floor but throughout its entire operational ecosystem. By continuously adapting its in-store experience and integrating cutting-edge digital features, IKEA solidifies its position as one of the world’s largest furniture retailers and a true life-at-home partner to millions of people worldwide.

With IKEA retail operations on 31 markets, Ingka Group is the largest IKEA retailer and represents about 90% of IKEA retail sales. It is a strategic partner to develop and innovate the IKEA business and help define common IKEA strategies. Ingka Group owns and operates IKEA sales channels under franchise agreements with Inter IKEA Systems B.V. It has three business areas: IKEA Retail, Ingka Investments, and Ingka Centres.
