Greece introduces draconian fines for drivers

Greek authorities are tightening road control with record-high penalties for violators. The fine for running a red light can reach 2,000 euros, and the driver will lose his license for a year. The penalties for using a mobile phone while driving are particularly severe. For a first offense, the fine is 350 euros, for a third offense – already 2,000 euros and a year without a license. If using a phone leads to a traffic accident, the penalty jumps to 4,000 euros, and the license is revoked for up to eight years.

For running a red light, the fine is up to 2,000 euros and the driver will lose his license for a year. The penalties for drinking alcohol are also increasing. If the test shows a high percentage of alcohol, the driver is threatened with up to 5 years in prison. If the violation is repeated, the driver will be without a license for 10 years. Parking on a disabled ramp is now punishable by 2,000 euros and one year without a license. The penalties for driving a motorcycle without a helmet have also increased. Greece ranks first in Europe in motorcycle deaths. For the first violation, 350 euros are paid and for each subsequent violation, the amount doubles. The aim of the new measures is to reduce road fatalities, the government said.
