A 45-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after two Jewish men were stabbed in north London on Wednesday.
London’s Metropolitan Police said Essa Suleiman had been charged following a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into the attack in Golders Green.
Suleiman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place in relation to the attack.
The attack was the latest of several against Jewish targets in recent months. On Thursday the UK’s terror threat level was raised to “severe”, following the incident, and counterterrorism police continue to lead the investigation into the stabbings.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to bring the “full power of the state” to tackle antisemitism in Britain after the stabbings, and has pledged to work alongside the criminal justice system to speed up sentencing in relation to antisemitic attacks.
“Our thoughts remain with the victims involved and specialist officers continue to provide them with support as their recovery continues,” said Commander Helen Flanagan, head of counterterrorism policing in London.
The two victims of the Golders Green stabbings, aged 76 and 34, were hospitalised with stab wounds. The 34-year-old has since been released from hospital and the 76-year-old remains there in a stable condition, the police said.
Suleiman was also on Friday charged with attempted murder in relation to a separate incident on Wednesday in south-east London.
The police said they were called to an incident at an address in Southwark, where a man armed with a knife “is believed to have had an altercation with the occupant before leaving”.
Officers carried out searches in the local area for the suspect but were unable to find him.
