Donald Trump has said the US-Iran ceasefire is “over” following renewed military strikes between the two countries.
Speaking at the Nato summit in Ankara, the US president told reporters: “As far as I’m concerned, it’s over.”
The US president’s comments came after the US and Iran traded military strikes. The US said it was responding to attacks on ships by the Islamic republic in the Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command announced what it said were “powerful strikes against Iran” on Tuesday evening in Washington, hours after the Treasury revoked a general licence allowing sales of Iranian oil.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said its forces had responded, with missile and drone strikes early on Wednesday targeting 85 sites at US military facilities.
At the summit on Wednesday, Trump sharply criticised Iran’s leaders, who he called “scum” and “sick people”.
“I don’t want to deal with them . . . it’s a waste of time dealing with them, they’re liars . . . there’s something wrong with them, they’re cuckoo,” he said.
Trump’s comments on Iran came at the start of the second day of the Nato summit in Ankara, which has been overshadowed by fraying transatlantic unity and the US president’s mercurial attitude to his allies.
The president renewed his attacks on Nato allies for refusing to back him on his bid to take control of Greenland, and failing to provide military support to the US during its operation against Iran.
“I’m very upset with Nato,” he said.
The US president directed particular anger towards Spain and said he planned to cut off “all trade” over Madrid’s outspoken criticism of the war in Iran.
