Skopje accused Bulgaria of interfering in the internal affairs of the R. North Macedonia and the response of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry

In connection with the successive public statements of the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again reminds that the European Consensus of July 2022, approved by all EU member states and Skopje, remains the valid roadmap for the neighboring country’s progress in its accession process. This is stated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“It is puzzling that the commitments undertaken by the Republic of North Macedonia are perceived by its Prime Minister as “interference in its internal affairs”. We consider such suggestions as another attempt to circumvent the commitments undertaken and divert public attention from the lack of reforms,” our foreign ministry stated.

“Once again, the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia demonstrates a lack of understanding of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. In this way, willingly or unwillingly, he is promoting manipulative and false theses that could be seen as real interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is categorical.

The position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs comes after Mickoski once again accused the “eastern neighbor” (Bulgaria) of interfering in the internal affairs of North Macedonia.

He said that he has heard many manifestations so far, but actions need to be seen, in a comment on Skopje’s European integration.

“We need to see actions, and the actions against me represent recognition of the decisions of the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for the Macedonian community in Bulgaria. Clear and unambiguous recognition of the centuries-old Macedonian identity, clear and unambiguous recognition of the centuries-old Macedonian culture, tradition, customs and clear and unambiguous recognition of the Macedonian language, which has been an official language in the UN since 1945. We must adhere to the principles, otherwise we have a serious problem,” said Mickoski after laying the cornerstone of the Macedonian-Greek border crossing “Markova Noga”, together with the EU Ambassador in Skopje Michalis Rokas.

The Prime Minister pointed out that his country has no problems with other nations, on the contrary, it respects them.

“If someone has a problem because someone bigger than him gives him advice and perceives it as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, then what we hear from our eastern neighbor, if it is not interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state, I don’t know what is,” said Hristijan Mickoski.
