(IN BRIEF) BASF and Graphit Kropfmühl have entered a partnership to reduce the carbon footprint of graphite produced at Graphit Kropfmühl’s Hauzenberg site by at least 25% using renewable energy certificates. This reduced-carbon graphite will be used in BASF’s Neopor® insulation products, furthering both companies’ sustainability goals. The collaboration supports BASF’s ambition to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050 and aligns with AMG’s CO2 abatement targets. This innovative approach highlights a joint effort to advance climate protection and promote a sustainable future.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 3-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In an innovative step towards sustainability, BASF SE (ETR: BAS), the world’s largest chemical producer, and Graphit Kropfmühl, a subsidiary of AMG Critical Materials N.V., have announced a new agreement to significantly lower the carbon footprint of graphite produced in Hauzenberg, Germany. BASF will supply renewable energy certificates, known as Guarantees of Origin (GoO), to Graphit Kropfmühl, certifying the use of renewable power at their production site. This initiative is expected to reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of the graphite by at least 25%.

The reduced PCF graphite will serve as a raw material for BASF’s Neopor®, a key component used in insulation products for buildings, thereby also lowering its carbon footprint. This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to climate protection and advancing towards net zero emissions.

Horatio Evers, Managing Director of BASF Renewable Energy GmbH, emphasized the importance of this partnership, highlighting the collaborative effort beyond their factory gates to protect the climate. Yong Liu, Director of Global Direct Procurement Plastic Additives at BASF, called the initiative a win-win for both companies, showcasing their unified approach to sustainability.

Thomas Junker, CEO of Graphit Kropfmühl, expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing their shared commitment to reducing the carbon footprint and moving towards a sustainable future.

BASF aims to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, with renewable power being a major lever. This partnership with Graphit Kropfmühl aligns with BASF’s ambitious climate goals and AMG’s strategic focus on CO2 abatement targets. Graphit Kropfmühl, supporting AMG’s commitment, aims to reduce its direct CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, corresponding to a reduction of 125,000 tons of CO2 from a 2019 baseline.
