Colin Jost has recalled the one thing his wife, Scarlett Johansson, had to say when he and Pete Davidson spent more than $200,000 on a boat.

The Saturday Night Live star, 43, spoke about the elaborate investment during an upcoming May 4 episode of Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman’s podcast, Smartless. Alongside their co-investor, Paul Italia, Jost and Davidson bought the decommissioned Staten Island ferry boat, named the John F. Kennedy, for $280,000 in 2022, according to The New York Times.

Jost said his dad was the first person he texted after making the purchase. “He literally was like, ‘Did you do your homework?’ Which is such a teacher thing to say,” the comedian shared on the Smartless, according to People. “I was like, ‘Dad, I’m just sort of texting you as a formality. I already bought the boat.’”

He then texted Johansson, to whom he’s been married since 2020. “Guess what? We own a ferry now,” he recalled telling the Black Widow star. “And she was like, ‘We?’”

Jost said that when he purchased the boat, he “thought in a real estate way,” explaining: “If you put that on a dock in Manhattan, you’ve suddenly got basically a building on the waterfront.”

While the co-owners have already hosted a 2024 Tommy Hilfiger New York Fashion Week show on the boat at Pier 17, Jost is still dreaming about future plans for the vessel.

“A home run for me is it’s a thing that could be used for an event space but also has an every-day purpose,” Jost added. “Two versions of it to me are, it could be an operating entertainment club, a place where you can go and have parties or there’s regular parties on it. And then… I could imagine creating a place like a [swim club] that’s not like a weird, fancy member’s club, but is actually more middle-class, Manhattan swim club.”

The vessel, which transported commuters between Manhattan and Staten Island, was officially commissioned in 1965 and taken out of service in 2021.

Davidson and Jost have previously opened up about the hefty ferry purchase. During a surprise appearance on Jost’s “Weekend Update” segment, in a November episode of SNL, Davidson responded to a New York Times article that called their project a “money-losing fiasco.”

“In case you’re wondering why I had to do a show in Saudi Arabia, we’re losing millions on this ferry. I assume that’s what the article says. I can’t spend five dollars on a paywall when I got a kid on the way, so,” Davidson, who welcomed his first child with girlfriend Elsie Hewitt in December, joked.

The King of Staten Island star shared his ideas for the ferry during a February 2025 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

“A lot of people joke about it, but we have a really extensive plan, and we’re a lot closer than people seem to think,” he said. “It’s like four or five floors, and on each floor we’re going to do something interesting. A hotel up top. Movie theater, an entertainment theater, some little shopping kiosks.”
