Discovery on Haida Gwaii has yielded the first confirmed marbled murrelet nest on the islands in more than 30 years. The nest was reached after a coastal approach across the Dixon Entrance in an open skiff, followed by an inland push through dense salal and stands of western red cedar. Observers reported locating the site within the forest canopy, marking a rare direct observation of a species that breeds in old-growth trees.
The find carries immediate conservation relevance for Haida Gwaii and the surrounding marine-forest environment. The marbled murrelet is known to nest in large, moss-covered branches in mature coastal forests; a confirmed nest after decades without a documented site provides concrete evidence that suitable breeding habitat persists on the archipelago. That persistence could shape priorities for habitat protection and targeted monitoring in the islands’ remaining old-growth stands.
Field teams described the search conditions as physically demanding and visibility-limited by understory growth, reflecting why nests of this species are seldom found. The bird’s secretive nesting behavior, combined with challenging terrain and canopy height, has made direct nest confirmations rare across its range.
