University of Liverpool Launches New Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research to Tackle Global Challenges

(PRESS RELEASE) LIVERPOOL, 6-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The University of Liverpool is set to officially launch its new Interdisciplinary Centre for Sustainability Research (ICSR) later this month, coinciding with the institution’s annual Sustainability Week. Established in 2024, the ICSR aims to support collaborative teams of researchers who will collectively address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By uniting experts from various disciplines, the Centre will foster interdisciplinary research, promote engagement with national and global thought leaders, and drive impactful solutions for sustainability.
The launch event will take place on Wednesday, February 26th, from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at Lecture Theatre 1 in the 502 Teaching Hub. The event is open to University staff, students, and the general public, with attendees encouraged to book their place in advance.
The event will be opened by Vice Chancellor Professor Tim Jones and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Impact, Professor Anthony Hollander. Professor Katie Atkinson, the Director of the ICSR, will provide an overview of the Centre’s objectives and the collaborative activities it will undertake to stimulate impactful, interdisciplinary research. Dr. Juan Bernabé-Moreno, Director of IBM Research Europe (Ireland and UK) and Climate and Sustainability Accelerated Discovery Lead, will share insights from his experience in leading large-scale sustainability projects that required collaboration between diverse expert groups.
Professor Atkinson expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I am excited about the official launch of the ICSR and look forward to hearing from Dr. Bernabé-Moreno. This new initiative is a great opportunity to strengthen and expand our interdisciplinary research collaborations at Liverpool, all while making a meaningful impact on sustainability.”
