Researchers in the Galápagos have identified a group of so-called “yellow” sea turtles whose movements do not match the wide-ranging migrations typically associated with the species. Rather than undertaking extended oceanic journeys, these animals appear to spend most of their time within a limited local range. The observation contrasts with long-standing understanding that sea turtles navigate with cues such as Earth’s magnetic field, ocean currents and the sun to cross large distances and return periodically to their natal regions.
Sea turtles are widely recognized for extensive migrations between feeding grounds and nesting beaches, a behaviour that supports genetic mixing and population resilience across basins. The newly described Galápagos group, identified by researchers studying local turtle movements, shows a pronounced tendency to remain in nearshore waters and nearby islands instead of following typical transoceanic pathways. Scientists characterise these individuals as unusually resident compared with neighbouring populations, a behavioral pattern that merits further ecological and genetic investigation to clarify whether it reflects a stable life-history strategy or a temporary shift.
The discovery carries practical implications for conservation planning and resource management.
