BT purchases TalkTalk from administration in £400m deal, securing 900 jobs

BT to buy TalkTalk out of administration in a transaction valued at around £400m, the companies have announced. The agreement, described by BT as a debt-free acquisition, includes TalkTalk‘s consumer broadband business and its wholesale arm, PlatformX Communications. The deal is expected to preserve approximately 900 jobs at the troubled provider.

The package covers the transfer of some 1.5 million retail customers alongside PlatformX’s wholesale contracts. BT said the purchase would be executed on a debt-free basis and that the consideration for the group and its wholesale business would be about £400m. The transaction follows TalkTalk entering administration earlier this month.

Competitors and industry stakeholders have reacted to the deal. Virgin Media O2 publicly expressed discontent, characterising the outcome as a “stitch-up” and signalling concerns about effects on competition in the consumer broadband market. The consolidation brings together significant retail and wholesale assets under one corporate umbrella, changing the landscape among national suppliers.

For customers and employees of TalkTalk, the deal offers immediate continuity of service and job security relative to the administration process. For the broader market, the transfer of PlatformX to BT links a wholesale infrastructure to a major retail operator, a configuration that industry observers will watch closely. Regulators and market participants will now assess the implications for choice, wholesale access and the dynamics among the UK’s remaining broadband providers as the acquisition moves through its next procedural steps.
